Penshurst 2008

"In the month of August (1853) we started for Mount Rouse, with ten bullocks and a dray loaded with tools and outfit for making a start building and fencing a stockyard." James SHARROCK (b:1838) then aged 18 recalled for the Hamilton Specator in 1923.

Celebrate the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the Sharrock families in Australia at Penshurst in 2008 over the labour day long weekend 8th, 9th and 10th of March in 2008.

The Program

Take your time over the weekend to enjoy the Western District of Victoria and visit the many historic sites. Material will be available, giving details of the sites. Information on the Historical Sites around the Western is in the Reunion Booklet.

  • Saturday 8th March from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon – Morning Tea at “Aunt Ethel’s” The house built in Bessiebelle by Joseph’s son, James and Mary Sharrock, and then extensively modernized by Dick & Ethel in the 1920’s was shifted to Tarrington in 2003. It has since become the “Coach Inn” Bed and Breakfast run by Diana & John Lawrence. The address is 37 Picnic Road, Tarrington.   • Saturday 8th March at 2:00 pm – Any participants interested in exploring the sites around Bessiebelle can meet with Raymond SHARROCK (b:1954) and Bruce SHARROCK at the Bessiebelle town hall. We will have access through private land to the sites of the original homes of Joseph’s sons – James & Mary, Benjamin & Rebecca, Thomas & Ellen and John & Druesena.   • Evening of Saturday 8th March - "Sharrock Shindig" at the home of Brian SHARROCK, Petschells Lane, Penshurst. Entertainment will be provided by those descendants with musical talent. BRING A PLATE TO SHARE (Pre-Dinner Nibbles, Salad or Desert), MEAT IS SUPPLIED, BYO DRINK. This event is being organised by Brian SHARROCK and Malcolm Sharrock. Interested musicians should contact Malcolm Sharrock.
  • Sunday will be a formal day to share memorabilia and experiences. This will take place at the Penshurst Town Hall, commencing 11:00 am. Debbie Robinson and Bruce SHARROCK and other Family historians will be present to answer many of your questions. Please contact Helen SHARROCK if you would like to contribute to this event. There will also be an opportunity to pose for a family portrait by professional photographer Robin Sharrock. Please bring along a basket lunch. Tea & Coffee will be available. The day will include:
    • Historical presentation describing the journey of the Sharrock Family from Holcot to Penshurst.
    • A ceremony at Boram Boram Cemetery to unveil the plaques organized by Bruce SHARROCK and Brian SHARROCK to commemorate the final resting place of many of the original Sharrock.
    • The old Council Chambers of Mt Rouse will be opened by the Mt Mount Rouse & District Historical Society. Archive material of life in Penshurst in the mid 1800’s will be available for your perusal.
    • Access to “Lovely Banks”, the original site of Joseph & Mary Anner’s home is currently being organised.
  • Sunday Evening and/or Monday - This time is being allocated for individual branches to meet together in smaller groups. If you are planning a "Branch Get-Together, then please send information to Ian SHARROCK to include on this website.
    • "Macarthur Sharrock Get Together" - Families of Edward & Hilda Sharrock, and Keith & Ena Sharrock will take place at Macarthur on Sunday evening. This is being organised by Rosemary SHARROCK (b:1955).
    • Friends and relatives etc of Lillian Annett and Frederick Sharrock at the Grand Central Hotel in Hamilton on Sunday 6-7 pm 9th Every body Welcome. Please let Coral know before 1st March 03 547 626 92
